Michael Silver of CFCFhas released his first full-length album titled ‘Continent’ on Paper Bag Records and we’ve been given the opportunity to take a full listen. The spotlight was originally put on Silver after his his competition winning remix of Crystal Castles “Air War” hit the blogs, followed by a plethora of follow-ups that delivered exactly what his fans would expect. I don’t think it would be fair to recall CFCF by his remixes after this point though as he has made the leap from an excellent remixer to a great overall producer with ‘Continent’.
The variety of genres heard on ‘Continent’ seems remarkably wide, from ambient to lounge, jazz, light hints of disco and electro, 80’s vibe, experimental and all around different. I know that sounds like quite a bit but don’t be alarmed, the one thing that holds this entire album together is Silver’s expertise: Subtle shifts in tempo will transition into the next track, What may have been a background pad will become the lead synth, Sudden switch-over from faint drums to a breathy latin percussion. With a musical theory that far exceeds my own understanding all I can say is it works, but that is the allure of his music – you don’t need to understand it, you just have to try it. So I say to all previous CFCF fans: ‘Continent’ ascends all expectations you would expect, this is a beautiful album that should not be missed. If this is your first listen: Keep an open mind and expect something new!
