Hot Chip At The Greek – A decade of love.
I have to start off by saying that my devotion for Hot Chip started from the moment I caught their performance on Conan O Brien in 2008 performing their single “Ready For The Floor”. It was love at first sight, everything I adored and wanted – electro, indie, pop synth, nerds and dreamy, melodic vocals. I was late in the game and felt absolutely gutted to hear that the London based collective had been out since 2000, where the fuck was I?
August 11th 2015 – I find myself standing front row center at the historic Greek Theater singing every lyric to “Cry For You”, a single off their 2015 release “Why Make Sense?.” This song in particular sticks out to me because it has all the traditional elements of a Hot Chip dance banger while relating to my latest breakup with lyrics like, “And like I’m dreaming on my own, another dream left alone, another reason looking for love, without a meaning looking for hope.” The sold out Griffith Park venue turned into a sweaty, dance party and singalong from the moment the band hit the stage. Hot Chip’s set lists are always aim to please, consisting of all time favorite tracks like “Boy From School” and “Over & Over” to their most fresh hit “Started Right”.
In nearly a decade, Hot Chip’s music has been there to comfort and relate to my trials and tribulations through the years. The band has shared some of my best festival moments – Treasure Island – 2008 in San Francisco and Hollywood Bowl – 2011 with LCD Soundsystem (at their final LA show) followed by a dirty, all vinyl Rhondavous DTLA warehouse party with all members of DFA spinning till 6AM. I thank and salute one of my biggest musical inspirations that have gotten me through my twenties.
